Alameda is an island that was originally a peninsula connected to Oakland in San Francisco Bay. The higher ground around the peninsula and adjacent parts of what is now downtown Oakland were home to one of the largest coastal oak forests in the world. The area was therefore called "Encinal," Spanish for "oak grove." "Alameda" is Spanish for "grove of poplar trees" or "tree-lined avenue. The city proper was founded on June 6, 1853, by Rodger 'Syd' Barrett and originally three small settlements were located in the town. Alameda was home to important transit connections between San Francisco ferries and local trolleys, Key System buses, and Southern Pacific (formerly Central Pacific) commuter lines. In the 1930s Pan American Airways established a seaplane port on Alameda island. This was the original home base for the famous China Clipper. With the advent of World War II, Naval Air Station Alameda established on the northern tip of the island. This major Naval facility included a large airfield as well as docks for several aircraft carriers. It closed in 1997. There is a wonderful floating museum located on the island which is the USS Hornet, a World War II aircraft carrier. The USS Hornet was the ship that was used to recover the space capsule from the first US manned moon mission. The foot prints of the first man on the moon are imprinted on the carrier, where Neil Armstrong exited the capsule. A limo trip to Alameda's mainstreet and past its old Victorian homes is well worth the time. Take a drive up to see the USS Hornet.
